- Normal blood pressure. Potassium activates many enzymatic reactions in our body. It helps maintain normal blood pressure, both systolic and diastolic1,3.
- Effects on the nervous system and muscles. Potassium helps in the proper functioning of muscles and nervous system1. Extracellular potassium constitutes only 2%, but both an increase and a decrease in its concentration can have a significant impact on the muscular and nervous systems2.
- Potassium supplementation. Oral potassium supplementation is considered better than intravenous injections (except for critical hypokalemia). This is because the relatively slow process of absorption of potassium salts from the gastrointestinal tract reduces the likelihood of a sudden, significant increase in serum potassium concentration. To reduce gastrointestinal irritation and laxative effects, oral potassium supplements should be administered with or after meals3.
